The project is implemented under the gender justice thematic focus. It was conceived based on the fact that curbing gender-based violence is undermined by limited investment in programs on shifting negative social norms through Traditional or faith-based institutions. It is against this backdrop that Ford Foundation under the Gender and Racial Justice program commissioned a mapping to identify the key players in the GBV prevention ecosystem with particular emphasis on those working with traditional, religious and cultural leaders, institutions, organizations and/or individuals across specific states in Nigeria and regionally, to shift social and religious norms that amplify GBV.
The mapping was implemented in Eleven (11) states and FCT (Kaduna, Sokoto, Gombe, Bauchi, Enugu, Imo, Cross River, Edo, Ekiti, Lagos and FCT) from March – September 2023. The project deployed both qualitative and quantitative methods to collate data. State enumerators were deployed to the twelve (12) project location to collate data about organisations, institutions and individuals particularly those working traditional, religious and cultural leaders to cause a shift in social norms working including initiatives, success,
learning and challenges related to gender-based violence programming. The project also entailed organisation capacity assessment to ascertain their internal and external capacity. The data of over two hundred (200) organisations was collated and preliminary
findings show social and cultural norms that are drivers of GBV. It also showed the different forms of GBV peculiar to the project state based on cultural and religious believes, it also entailed recommendations to strengthen Ford Foundation’s programming on GBV prevention. The report was to further review at the Validation meeting and inputs were received to strengthen the report.
